Trains, ships, and smokestacks are constantly in motion beyond the edges of the board a rollercoaster operates in the middle, and the animated presentation of a new property for sale looks like something out of a computer-generated television commercial. Ubisoft’s visual development of Monopoly Plus from a flat board into an animated, living world is deliberately provocative. You can also adjust the rules and settings a bit to increase the pace of the game, which is handy because a single two-player session can run for longer than an hour. Monopoly Plus handles all of the rules for you, and eliminates manually managing cards, cash, and plastic objects from the board game. Everyone knows generally what Monopoly is, and quite possibly how to play it. Why Is It Great For Couples? An easy answer: Monopoly’s ubiquitous. Apart from reading on-screen instructions for each of these transactions, they’re easy to handle. The last player standing wins the game.Īlthough rolling the dice, moving, and choosing to buy or auction properties are the meat of the game, Monopoly Plus includes fairly simple screens to let you add homes or hotels to properties, trade properties between players, and raise money as needed by mortgaging properties or removing houses. But landing on an owned property forces you to pay a fixed rent to the owner, and the more developed the property is, the better the chance you’ll run out of money and have to declare bankruptcy. Landing on an unowned property gives you the ability to buy it at a full price or auction it, prospectively for less. How Do You Play? One to four players can share one controller or use individual controllers, primarily holding down one button to roll two dice before moving a metal avatar around properties on the board’s edge. Sold alone for $15 or in a bundle with a custom board creator and Monopoly card game for $30, Monopoly Plus offers two major versions of the real estate-grabbing, dice-rolling table game: a simple 3-D version where a camera rotates and zooms around the original board with stacks of cards and fake cash, and an insane 3-D version that brings the board to life in truly outlandish fashion. Partnered with Hasbro, longtime console game developer Ubisoft has gone completely over the top with its video game adaptation of the classic board game Monopoly. That’s when I pressed the reset button and went for something I knew would work. We loaded up Worms Battlegrounds to see if it would be any better, but it was full of its own control and story oddities, so fatigue and annoyance quickly set in for both of us. There was no way we’d actually play the game together. The story was a bit off, the interface clunky, and there wasn’t much room for two players to cooperate or compete. Even after 20 minutes of tutorial-like walking through the controls, my wife didn’t feel comfortable with them, and basically wanted to hand the controller over to me – assuming we wanted to keep playing at all. How do you play? Well, the developer originally designed it to work with Xbox One’s Kinect for gesture controls, but had to retrofit D4 with an awkward on-screen cursor system when Microsoft de-bundled Kinect from the console. It took less than 30 minutes to see that D4 was a mistake. (Don’t buy them at full price through Microsoft Xbox Live Gold cards are sold at a discount here, with a current eBay deal taking a one-year membership down further.) I signed up for Xbox Live Gold, got Worms Battlegrounds for free at the same time as D4, and loaded them up. D4 normally sells for $15 on its own, so since a three-month Xbox Live Gold membership is only $20, you get three months of free downloadable software by spending five extra dollars. Microsoft published D4, and is literally giving it away as one of several Xbox Live Gold “Games With Gold†titles this month. Released earlier this year for the Xbox One, it’s a murder mystery with fully 3-D graphics and a modern storyline. On the surface, Access Games’ D4 sounded like a “can’t lose†proposition. Practitioners and policy makers will be aided in achieving greater precision and clarity in their actions and decisions if those conducting and communicating future research keep this challenge in mind across domains, especially in those cases in which the taxonomy is most variable (e.g., self-regulation, executive function, general learning competencies). To communicate across fields and between research and practice communities requires being aware of the different categorical frameworks and terms that are used and being able to discuss the various concepts and content-and their implications-with clarity across those different frameworks. Because different fields and sectors may not use the same categorizations and vocabulary for these domains and skills, developing practices and policies that support more consistent and continuous development and early learning across birth through age 8 will require a concerted effort to communicate clearly and come to a mutual understanding of the goals for children. This point foreshadows a theme that is addressed more fully in subsequent chapters. It is less important that all fields of research, practice, and policy adhere to the exact same categorizations, and more important that all conduct their work in a way that is cognizant and inclusive of all the elements that contribute to child development and early learning, and that all fields recognize that they are interactive and mutually reinforcing rather than hierarchical. In an overarching example of interactions, a child’s security both physically and in relationships creates the context in which learning is most achievable across all of the domains. Similarly, although certain skills and concept knowledge are distinct to developing proficiency in particular subject areas, learning in these subject areas also both requires and supports general cognitive skills such as reasoning and attention, as well as learning competencies and socioemotional competence. For example, socioemotionalĬompetence is important for self-regulation, as are certain cognitive skills, and both emotional and cognitive self-regulation are important for children to be able to exercise learning competencies. Therefore, the importance of the interactions among the domains is emphasized throughout this chapter. Each enables and mutually supports learning and development in the others. The challenge of cleanly separating these concepts highlights a key attribute of all of these domains, which is that they do not develop or operate in isolation. Mental health is closely linked to socioemotional competence, but is also inseparable from health. Attention and memory could be considered a part of general cognitive processes, as embedded within executive function, or linked to learning competencies related to persistence. It is sometimes categorized as a part of executive function, as a part of socioemotional competence, or as a part of learning competencies. Similarly, self-regulation has both cognitive and emotional dimensions. For example, different disciplines and researchers have categorized different general cognitive processes under the categorical term “executive function.” General cognitive processes also relate to learning competencies such as persistence and engagement. Indeed, it is essential to recognize that the domains shown in Figure 4-1 are not easily separable and that a case can be made for multiple different categorizations. The committee does not intend to present this as a single best set of terms or a single best categorical organization. To organize the discussion in this report, the committee elected to use the approach and overarching terms depicted in Figure 4-1. The domains of child development and early learning are discussed in different terms and categorized in different ways in the various fields and disciplines that are involved in research, practice, and policy related to children from birth through age 8. The FDNY received roughly 2 million letters of praise and support after 9/11. The flames at Ground Zero were only fully extinguished on 19 December 2001, 99 days after the attack. Search and rescue efforts at Ground Zero, as well as the clearance of the site, lasted for 9 months. The September 11 terror attacks took the lives of some 3,000 people, including 343 New York City firefighters. And in 1967, the FDNY enclosed its vehicles, preventing firefighters from riding on the outside of the cab. New companies were formed towards the close of the 1960s to alleviate the strain on existing firefighters. The FDNY implemented a number of changes to combat the challenges of the ‘war years’. In 1977, by comparison, the department fought nearly 130,000. In 1960, the FDNY battled roughly 60,000 fires. Arson rates rose, and firefighters were increasingly attacked while riding on the outside of their vehicles. Property values slumped, so landlords took to burning down their assets for insurance payouts. Financial crisis and social unrestĪs New York’s prosperity dwindled in the 1960s and 1970s, poverty and civil unrest grew, leading to what became known as the city’s ‘war years’. It went on to play a critical role in fighting major New York fires such as the Jersey City Pier fire in 1964 and the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. In 1959 the Marine Division was established. The FDNY developed equipment and strategies to fight fires along the vast waterfront area of the city with a squad of fire-fighting boats. The department rapidly expanded over the next 100 years to prepare for the possibility of attack during multiple foreign wars, whilst dealing with the complexity of protecting the city’s fast-growing population. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire on 25 March 1911. A system of hoses was introduced alongside more elaborate fire fighting apparatus such as hand pumpers, hook and ladder trucks, and hose reels, all of which had to be hand-drawn. As the city’s population expanded, a more efficient means of fighting fires was needed. In 1663 the British took over the New Amsterdam settlement and renamed it New York. This was due to their equipment being little more than a large number of buckets and ladders that the group would patrol the local streets with, watching out for fires in the wooden chimneys or thatched roofs of local houses. The origins of the FDNY date back to 1648, when New York was a Dutch settlement known as New Amsterdam.Ī recently arrived immigrant called Peter Stuyvesant formed a group of local volunteer fire wardens who became known as ‘the bucket brigades’. From the Great Fire of 1835 to the 1977 Blackout and the more recent devastation of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, ‘New York’s Bravest’ have been at the forefront of some of the world’s most famous fires. The department has faced some unique fire-fighting challenges in its history. Approximately some 11,000 uniformed fire-fighting employees serve the city’s 8.5 million residents. The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is the biggest Fire Department in the United States and the second largest in the world, after the Tokyo Fire Department. In Klondike Solitaire, only kings can move into empty spaces, but in Spider, any card can move into the empty space. Once you have a sequence that descends from king to ace of the same suit, it will immediately be placed into a foundation pile and removed from play. Instead of building on separate foundation piles, like in Solitaire, you build descending sequences within the tableau. If, however, the sequence includes a 6 of Hearts, 5 of Spades, and 4 Hearts, you cannot move that sequence. For example, if you’re playing with Spades and Hearts and have a 6 of Hearts, 5 of Hearts, and a 4 Hearts, you can move that whole set on top of a 7 of Hearts or a 7 of Spades. If you want to move an entire sequence or column of cards, the sequence or column must be of the same suit, and you can place it on a card that is 1 rank higher but of either suit. Move columns of cards if they are the same suit. For example, if you’re playing with Clubs and Diamonds, a 6 of Clubs can be placed on top of a 7 of Clubs or a 7 of whatever the second suit is (Diamonds, Hearts, or Spades). To arrange individual cards, you just move them on top of a card that is 1 rank higher-even if it’s not the same suit. Move individual cards by rank, regardless of suit. When you deal from the stock pile, you will be dealt 1 face-up card on each column, overlapping the cards already present. You begin with only 10 face-up cards, but you can free face-down cards by removing a face-up card from on top of it. The only cards you can move are the face-up cards in the columns of the tableau. These rules help you understand how to play Spider Solitaire (2 Suits): The waste pile: Unlike Solitaire, you don’t use a waste pile because the stockpile cards are dealt directly onto columns in the tableau.Instead, you create the entire sequence in the tableau and then transfer it to a foundation pile when it is complete. Additionally, you don’t build on those spaces during the game. The Foundation piles: Like classic Solitaire, you leave room at the top for foundation piles, but you need 8 spaces instead of 4.If the stock pile runs out and you can’t make any more moves, you have lost the game. When you are stuck and can’t make any more moves, you deal 1 card face-up to each column from the stock pile until the stock pile runs out. The stock pile: The remaining 50 cards are placed at the top left of your space, face-down, for the stock pile. You’ll arrange cards in the tableau in descending order instead of building on active foundation piles. All cards are face-down except the last card of each column, which is face-up. You deal out 54 cards from left to right in 10 columns, with 6 cards in the first 4 columns and 5 cards in the last 6 columns. The tableau: Like any Solitaire game, the tableau is the main area for play.Using two decks of two different suits, you arrange your game space into three key parts: These sequences get transferred to the 8 separate foundation piles. ObjectiveĬlear all the cards by building sequences within the tableau, separated by suit and arranged in descending order from King (high) to Ace (low). Well-suited for intermediate players, Spider Solitaire (2 Suits) uses 104 cards-1 deck of Hearts and 1 deck of Spades. If you enjoy Spider Solitaire but want more of a challenge, you’re ready for Spider Solitaire (2 Suits). Turning on all there options will enable the automatic lens corrections. To turn on the lens corrections, go to the RAW develop and then to the Lens tab. I have gone through some examples in the video above. Masking 10 - 15 (You can actually turn this off if you want)įor higher ISO images, you’ll need to turn up the luminance denoise amount and lower the sharpening or increase the sharpening masking. These may be slightly different than the ones I set in the video, but they’re in the ballpark: For ISO 200 images I use the following settings. These include the lens used, the ISO and so on. This means setting some basic settings for sharpening and denoise and loading a LUT.įor sharpening, it depends on a number of factors. Once you have your Workspace set up and the LUTs downloaded, you’ll want to set up some defaults. Luminar Jupiter also includes the option to use DCP colour profiles, but unfortunately, I can’t find any good ones online, so I’m sticking with the LUTs option for now. However, you can save this as part of a preset, which we’ll get to in a minute. The software keeps the last few that you use in the list, but there’s no way that I know to alter the other ones that are already in the list so you may need to load them each time. To load a LUT simply select the option from the pop-up menu in the LUT mapping filter inside of Luminar. I keep mine in the pictures folder on my Mac. You need to download the 3DL option, which is the second link on the page ( at the time of writing.) Once you’ve downloaded these, save them to somewhere safe and easy to access. I’ve done a bit of searching online, and the ones linked here are the best that I’ve found. The next thing that you’ll want to do is download some film simulation LUTs that will let you match the in-camera film simulation modes. If you want you can now set this as your default workspace, by choosing that option from the same menu. Once you’ve done this, you can save this as a new workspace by going to the workspace pop-up menu and choosing “Save Workspace”. The other thing that I’ve done is drag the LUT mapping filter that’s included in the professional workspace so that it’s just after the sharpening filter. You should drag this in the stack so that it’s placed just after the Denoise filter. You’ll need a Sharpening filter, which you can add from the “Add Filters” button. The included “professional” workspace is a good starting point, but I suggest customising it a bit. The first thing you should do is set up a workspace for processing raw files. |
